Swifties at is the new play at Theatre N16 in Balham written by Tom Stenton and directed by Luke Davies (The Chemsex Monologues, The HIV Monologues) about Taylor Swift, Instagram and having no money. A brave adaptation of Jean Genet’s The Maids, the play follows Yasmin (Isabella Niloufar) and Nina (Tanya Cubric) who work in an Amazon “fulfilment centre” in Luton and are also Swift’s biggest fans. But as they plot to become part of Tay Tay’s famous ‘girl squad’, reality and fantasy start to blur and collide. Exploring the alienating and destructive effect that poverty, celebrity fetishism and social media can have on the lives of normal people, Swifties is darkly comic and thoroughly entertaining. I sat down with director Luke Davies and his cast to discuss the inspiration for the play, what the lady herself would think of the play if she saw it and the similarities between Taylor Swift and Donald Trump…
By Sarah Bradbury. First broadcast on Wandsworth Radio on 8th March 2017.
